Choosing the best phone on the market was a big struggle for me. In my mind, it had to be as sustainable as it possibly could, while having a nice camera and being a natural survivor. Then, my previous boss and a friend Jørgen Ravneberg ( btw he wrote a super helpful and beautiful book about plants in the forest which you can eat, so if you speak Norwegian, check it here) showed me this fantastic start-up from the Netherlands whose name is FAIRPHONE.
First of all, they have started from an awareness campaign, with a documentary about a conflict around the minerals in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2011. So with this in mind, you feel the vibe of the idea. Additionally, they keep focusing on the circular economy, based on repairing and reusing, which remains in contrast with the most popular and greedy — linear economy.
After the movie the authors wanted to do even more for the environment and this is when they founded Fairphone.
SHORTCUT:
WHY?
All in all – impact.
Finally, they work really closely with the child-labour issue and started the SKILLS INSTEAD OF SHOVELS programme in Uganda, for which they teamed up with The Stop Child Labour organization. So, in other words, terrific guys. But at the same time remember that “the change is in your hands”.
FOR WHOM?
Everyone who cares about our planet but still wants to use the best technology there is.
HOW MUCH?
€399 — an honest price for the Fairphone 3: “The phone that cares about people and the planet”
€439 — another frank number for the Fairphone 3+: “Same size, bigger impact”
