Choosing the best phone on the market was a real challenge for me. In my mind, it had to be as sustainable as possible, with a great camera and built to last. Then, my former boss and friend, Jørgen Ravneberg (by the way, he wrote a fantastic and insightful book about edible plants in the forest—if you speak Norwegian, check it out [here]), introduced me to an incredible Dutch start-up called FAIRPHONE.
First off, they launched with an awareness campaign, including a documentary about the conflict surrounding minerals in the Democratic Republic of Congo back in 2011. That gives you an idea of the values they stand for. Moreover, they focus heavily on the circular economy—emphasizing repair and reuse—in stark contrast to the typical greedy, linear economy.
After the movie the authors wanted to do even more for the environment and this is when they founded Fairphone.
